American Hybrid

Wild Plum Tree

Dwarf

The original plum/apricot hybrid introduced by Luther Burbank, sometimes referred to as the Burbank Plumcot. Both the tree form and fruit appearance show the plum influence. The tree itself is much more vigorous and is healthier looking than most apricots. In fact, with its glossy abundant foliage and tall shrubby form it makes an ideal landscaping specimen. Large, round fruit has melon-red blush over yellow skin. Golden yellow, super juicy, plum-like flesh has a tangy touch of that aromatic apricot flavour. Wild Plum

The black plum (Prunus nigra) is the best pollinator for hybrid plum trees. It also produces a tasty and very sweet fruit. The black plum, or Prunus nigra, is the wild plum tree of Canada. Their fruit is delicious, so be sure to pick them when they are ripe. They are magnificent in spring with their bloom, and their perfume invades the surroundings... Resulting from seedlings, it has not been grafted.

With a larger than average size and a rounded stem end tapering to a soft point, it does indeed look like a large heart. It has a mottled pistachio and purple skin, deepening to burgundy red with a powdery matte finish. When ripe, it is heavy in the hand, full of sweet juice and firm but delicate flesh, flushed with deep ruby red color throughout. The Elephant Heart plum is floral and sweet with just a hint of acid, and should be eaten within a few days of purchase as it has a short shelf life at maturity.

Pluots, by definition, are three-quarters plum and one-quarter apricot. Possibly the best known Pluot variety is Dapple Dandy, created by famed fruit breeder Floyd Zaiger of Modesto, California. The skin of this large, chubby-cheeked fruit turns to a mottled maroon and pale-yellow, when ripe, giving rise to the whimsical name of 'Dinosaur Egg', under which it has also been marketed. The flesh, which is bright red, fading to a pinkish white near the centre, is incredibly sweet with a distinct plum apricot flavour that has given Dapple Dandy the winning edge in numerous taste tests. It is known as a good pollenizer for other pluots and plumcots.

What is a Pluot?

Pluots are unique, interspecies hybrids, mixing a lot of plum with a lesser amount of apricot genetics. The fruits look like plums and taste like plums but they have a texture more like apricots. The pluot is an "interspecific" hybrid, a complex mix of two species of fruit. It is some 70 percent plum and some 30 percent apricot. Smooth-skinned and sturdy, the fruit is full of sweet juice without the tough skin of a plum.

About Flavor King Pluot Trees

Flavor King pluot trees produce some of the best (and most popular) pluots. Since the plum-apricot hybrids resemble plums, many call the fruits “Flavor King plums.” They are celebrated for their sensational bouquet and sweet, spicy flavor. How to Grow Flavor King Pluot Trees

For those gardeners wondering how to grow Flavor King pluots, check your hardiness zone first. And Flavor King pluot trees have a relatively low chill requirement. They need less than 400 hours of temperatures at 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 C.) or below to produce. Don’t worry about having to rush the harvest. The fruit is ready for harvest in mid-season, usually during late summer and early fall, but there’s no hurry to get it off the tree. The complex pedigree of this Zaiger Hybrids creation, has plumcot genetics on both top and bottom side. Although Flavor King® looks much like a regular, medium/large, round, dark purple plum, it's unique flavour profile makes it almost addictive. To quote Chip Brantley, a fine food fanatic who wrote 'The Perfect Fruit', (a book about the world of plums, pluots and the like), "The spicy, sweet flesh tasted of caramel and almonds, and it started dark red just under the skin, then bled to a lighter pink near the pit." The Pluot is “Interspecific”, meaning it is a complex hybrid of 70 percent plum, 30 percent apricot with decidedly more plum-like traits. Also called a plumcot, the fruit of a Pluot is smooth-skinned like a plum, sturdy and durable with luscious flavor. It has the juiciness of a fully ripe plum without the notoriously tough skin and tart center that is typical of a plum.

The Flavor Queen Pluot® is a new and distinct variety, characterized by its large size, vigorous, semi-spreading growth and is a productive and regular bearer of firm, yellow flesh, clingstone fruit. A great source of vitamin A!
